The siding industry has changed markedly over the years.  Pre WWII, most siding was either wood, stucco or brick.  While those sidings are solid, quality selections, they proved to be expensive either to install or maintain.

Since that time, manufactured sidings such as aluminum, vinyl and steel have offered the combination of visually attractive yet maintenance free value at a much lower price, again, due to their maintenance free qualities---no painting for the life of the product.

The intent of these products is that replacement would be mainly due to style change or wear and tear over the decades rather than paint failure.  30 to 40 years or more could mean 10 to 15 house painting costs over that time, a real savings with these manufactured sidings.  That is why these sidings are by far the most requested.

Aluminum, being a softer metal is more susceptible to storm damage of hail but is a wonderful product that provides for high quality paint finishes.

Vinyl, also susceptible to storm damage, is much easier to switch out for smaller repairs.  Steel, the toughest of the maintenance free products, unfortunately has gotten more expensive due to the industry steel prices and now rivals the cement board products in pricing.  Still, tho it gives a wonderful maintenance free Look and long term paint savings!

Not to be overlooked are the cement board styles originally designed many decades ago for climates with termites.   By reducing or removing the wood material with these cement styles, termites were not as effective in establishing their homes within these walls.
